Consider This Before Installing Solar

Going solar by installing a solar power generation array for your business should be the result of a culmination of thoughtful choices.

We've compiled some questions to consider before taking the leap into solar.

Consider This Before Installing Solar

Physical Space

  • Do you have room on the roof or in a nearby green space for solar panels?
  • What's the condition of the roof or green space? Will you need to update the roof or clear the green space?
  • Do you live in a sunny location? Is the sunlight on the roof or green space blocked by tall buildings or trees?
  • Do you rent/own? If you rent, how long is your lease? Most contracts for solar power are for a minimum of 10 years and go up to 30 years. Will your landlord be willing to install solar on their property for your use?

Energy Needs

  • How will your energy needs change in the future?
    •  Have you conducted a recent energy audit AND implemented all the suggested changes?
    •  If you're a manufacturing business, will you be adding to your square footage or adding more machines that increase your electricity load? Will your fleet update to electric vehicles that need charging? Will more staff work from home?
  • What is your motivation for going solar? Will that reason still exist in the next 10-30 years? Examples could be price, lowering your carbon footprint, obtaining a reliable electricity source.

Financing and Ownership

  • Will you pay for the build outright, finance it, or work with a team to allow an investor to build and own it?
  • Do you qualify for financing options (typically 3 years of past financials and projections)?
  • Would you rather pay a loan down plus electricity every month and own the solar system (and be responsible for upkeep and maintenance) or pay a lower electricity bill every month and save money on operating expenses and not own the solar system?

Once you've decided which path to take, the next big decision lies in who you choose to partner with. We suggest first deciding which services you want your solar partner to provide; construction only, construction and an investment partner, or just consultation or project management services.

After deciding which services are important to you, ask around and start doing research! Look for businesses with someone local that knows the area, has knowledgeable people you feel comfortable with that are good communicators, and who will give you realistic expectations of their services. If it sounds too good to be true... well, you know the rest!

Keep in mind that no matter which path you take, the process of creating, permitting, installing, testing, and powering on a solar system can be a lengthy process. Hiring people and teams familiar with your area with industry connections will help the process along and ensure all of the i's are dotted and t's are crossed, and that you'll have a fully functioning solar array at the end of the project for years to come.
